What can I expect in a therapy session?Usually a therapy session is 50 minutes. The remaining 10 minutes will be used by your therapist to write notes and plan for your next session. Sessions are often structured loosely as 15 minutes of debriefing and collaborating, 30 minutes of intervention, learning new skills, processing, and 5 minutes of wind down at the end to close the session.

What do you recommend for duration of therapyTherapy duration is different for everyone. If you are coming for CBT for minor anxiety and depression, 4-6 sessions might be all you find you need, in other cases 10-12 might be a better fit. However, If you are coming to therapy for trauma or deep seeded issues, the time you spend in therapy will likely be longer and could range from 12-20 sessions, or much longer. The reason for this is that a good therapist will want to build rapport and trust with you so that you can do difficult emotional work together, of course, this takes time to build trust and should not be rushed for your mental health. Likewise, I pride myself on working myself out of a job with clients, which means giving you the tools to cope so that eventually you don't need sessions for years on end.

I have insurance, am I covered?"While most companies have no issue covering and reimbursing you for my services, I can't guarantee that you will be covered for psychotherapy services. You will need to get into contact with your insurance company and specify that it is under registered psychotherapist, as some companies cover social work/psychological services, and others do not include psychotherapy specifically. Typically, you will be asked to provide an invoice and or receipt, which I will provide to you after payment, and you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

I would like to have my partner/mother/child present with me for session, is that ok?"At this time I am not offering family or couples therapy, but I am more than willing to accomodate you if you would like your support person there with you to help you for one or two sessions as a part of your overall treatment.

What can I expect in the first session? The first session is informal, relaxed, and goes by faster than you think! It focuses on gathering background information so I can learn how to help you properly. We start with going over informed consent and confidentiality, and answering any questions you may have. I will then ask questions about your background, your family, friends, partners, and lifestyle, struggles, and current concerns. Lastly, we will go over what types of therapy will be helpful for you based on the above information and collaborate to create tangible goals within therapy.
